SCHEDULED LESSONS - SURF EXPERIENCE

This is the most fun for first timers to meet others who are learning to surf for the first time or have some limited experience riding a surfboard. Great fun for families too, groups of friends, or corporate groups. Our Surf Coaches will ensure you are comfortable in the water at all times. The use of buoyant and light soft boards makes it easy to learn, without the bruises. Group size is up to 6 people to 1 coach.

When we surf

Scheduled surf lessons start at 9.00am most mornings (December/January) or on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Morning lessons are preferable to afternoon because conditions are usually better. We do lessons in the afternoon too, but to ensure we make this a memorable experience for you, its best to book ahead.

Where we surf - is it safe

Sandy Bay on the Tutukaka Coast is scenically breathtaking with a white sandy beach and rocky outcrops. On the horizon sit the Poor Knights Islands. Sandy Bay is where you will find Tutukaka Surf Experience on most days in summer (December/January), but sometimes this varies depending on the conditions. Weather, surf conditions and seasonality can change where and when we surf, so it is always best to book ahead, that way we can contact you if there are any changes.

Our coaches have been trained to ensure you are comfortable in the water at all times.

Our Coaches

Our coaches for the 2009/10 Season are Mal, Simon and Michelle and are experienced surfers in all conditions including competition surfing. Their qualifications include International Surf Coaching Certificate, NZ Surf Lifesaving Certificate and all have First Aid Certificates (OSH Recognised).

What you learn

Paddling out, balance and board control, how to stand and ride the wave to the shore, how to keep yourself safe in the surf and about the beaches of the Tutukaka Coast. Back to top

How long the surf lesson takes and what is included in the cost

The first lesson takes approximately 2 hours with our qualified instructors but allow 2 and a half hours for your surf experience. We include the hire of a wetsuit to keep you warm in the surf and a buoyant easy-to-learn-on surfboard, plus we will get that shot of you riding a wave. You bring what you normally swim in and leave the rest to us for maximum fun.

How you get to the surf beach

Pick-ups can be made en route to the beach or from the Tutukaka Surf Co shop at Tutukaka Marina or click here for a map of the Tutukaka Coast. If you don't have a car and are travelling from Whangarei, phone us and we'll try and sort you out.

Once you have had your first lesson, further lessons are available at discounted rates or, you can keep practising your recently learned skills on a Tutukaka Surf Company hire board. Back to top

ONE ON ONE SURF LESSONS

We understand that scheduled surf lessons may not suit you. You might be more comfortable doing a lesson on your own or, you are short of time on the Tutukaka Coast and can't make it to a scheduled surf lesson. Perhaps you have already had a few lessons and have your own surf board and are ready to learn a few more techniques. Then private one on one coaching will suit you with a qualified Tutukaka Surf Company Coach. One on one surf lessons include wetsuit and board hire if required, plus photographs of you surfing.

SERIES OF LESSONS

These can be organised with our coaches for first time surfers or more experienced learners. A program can be tailored depending on current surfing ability over several days including board hire to practice skills.

FOLLOW-UP SURF LESSONS

Follow up lessons and programs can be arranged to improve your surfing, whatever your ability. For example, for those that have had a surf lesson are confident white water riders and want to take it further can learn the techniques such as:

  • surfing the greenwater
  • turning and traversing a wave
  • getting out the back
  • duck diving your board

We invite more advanced surfers to enquire about advanced coaching programmes and longboard coaching. Back to top
